Montreat Youth Conference Updates
Fourteen of Pioneer's youth and four adult leaders are spending the week of July 11-18, 2009 at Montreat Youth Conference.  It's the first time for Pioneer to send a group to MYC!  Check here for regular updates from the group as they experience the week as part of  the "World On Fire!"  The posts are in blog format -- the newest post is at the top of the page.  Each new post starts with the time of day the post was sent.  Enjoy this wonderful way of staying connected with our group in Montreat!

12:19pm, Friday - It Has Been an Amazing Week

I told the young people at the beginning of the week, without wanting to give too much away, and trying to stay out of God's way (we all need to do that more often, don't we?), that the week is a process.  Each moment of every day builds on each other moment throughout the week.  It is amazing to look back to the beginning of the week.   We now dance with less self-consciousness, sing with greater boldness, and love one another with more intentionality.

In the typical “flow” of a week at Montreat, Wednesday or Thursday can be sometimes jokingly, sometimes cheesily, be referred to as "cry day."  It is not unusual for someone on the platform, or in a small group, or back home group to share a deep and difficult personal experience that they have had and how God was present in that experience.  The natural rhythm of this conference didn't take us there with a specific “tear jerker” story, and I actually appreciated that intentional decision by the leadership of this conference.  But the total sum of all the stories shared, the theme of the week, and the small group experiences, and the years of love and nurture so many of you in the Pioneer family have already invested in the young people, led us to not a culmination but to a “birth” of sorts.  To be more theologically on point I am reminded that "anyone who is in Christ is a new creation, the old life has passed away, new life has begun."

We had a powerful back home time last night.  All of us have "stuff" in our lives and in the lives of those we love and care about.  Add to the mix that being a teenager in today's world may be one of the very hardest times in life, or it certainly can seem that way.  The young people on the conference planning team had talked about wanting a conference that “went there” – that would risk being authentic and real.  Our youth took that to heart last night, not because of a challenge given to them by someone else, but because of the very deep and real ways they have experienced God this week.  They “went there” and got real with one another.  Although they know it won't be as easy back home, they expressed their deep desire to be a youth group that can be real with each other.  They definitely don’t want to be a Montreat clique, but want to work to bring others in the youth group into this kind of sacred space, this safe sacred place that a “real” youth group can be.  They want to literally wrap arms around one another and give each other encouragement in times of struggle, shoulders to cry on in times of grief, and to love our Pioneer family, our NE Ohio neighbors, and our global neighbors in ways that our real, in ways that matter.  It will be a challenge, but one we are all ready to tackle because of the experience we have shared this week.

What matters most to us is for you to continue to buoy us with your prayers, love and support, as we continue to pray for you, so that we may come down from this mountain changed, and ready to set this World on Fire with the love of the living God.  We want this to be not for one week in July each summer, but to make it a more intentional part of our everyday lives.

WOW... what a week it has been.  I'm crazy enough to believe that with this particular group of young people, sharing their stories, bringing others into the fold, and holding each other accountable, the ripple effects of what God has done in this place will reach even the farthest corners of the world...

THANK YOU PIONEER.  We love you and cannot wait to share with you and have you hear directly from the youth about this experience.  Pray for traveling mercies and our safe return tomorrow (Saturday) night.  We hope to be back around 7:00pm.  Pray for God to continue to work in the lives of these young people so that they hear over and over again what they already know:  that there is no place they can go, or no challenge or struggle they face, that can separate them from the love of God in Christ Jesus.

See you soon!

3:20pm, Thursday:  Another Great Day at Montreat

It is another picturesque “chamber of commerce” day in the gorgeous Blue Ridge mountains.  The seventh of nine small group sessions is drawing the a close, and there is a "World's Fair" recreation event about to take place.  Part of that will include a canned food drive for the Manna Food Bank here in the valley that is literally experiencing empty shelves as we speak.  We plan to do our part.

Last night was communion worship, and there is nothing quite like the logistical task of planning communion for 1300+ people!  But you can imagine the power of that many young people sharing communion together – it was amazing.  Our worship concluded with the African tune “Si Ya Hamba” which translates into "We Are Marching in the Light of God".  Our young people are certainly doing just that!

We had a very special time in back home group last night as Conner and Chase shared their adoption story with their peers.  One of the keynote and worship themes yesterday was "We are not alone," that we are part of the ancient story, God's story.  Even in moments when we feel we have been abandoned by the world we have a cloud of witnesses, past and present, cheering us on and praying for us.  Chase and Conner’s story was a real “living out” of that reality.  It was great for our group to hear Lindsey M. and Keven F. tell the stories of the Pioneer family praying for Conner and Chase long before they even arrived.  To make the connection that people in NE Ohio were already praying for children half a world away in Bulgaria and that God would bring them into a new life and home and a wonderful church family that has nurtured and cared for them.  We are not alone!  We are traveling companions with each other every step of the way, together looking for ways to set the world of fire with the love of God in Christ Jesus!

We hope to get more words to you from our young people even as we try to engage ourselves fully in the remaining conference activities today and tomorrow.  Thank you Pioneer Church for being such a meaningful part of our journey that started LONG before last Saturday, and will continue this day and always... We are praying for you as you pray for us, and we are looking forward to seeing you again face to face in the coming days!

8:45pm, Wednesday:  More Posts from Youth

Hey Everyone!  I’m having a blast here at Montreat.  Today has been my favorite day so far.  We started the morning with some fun energizers as always, and then sang some great songs.  This morning’s Keynote was great.  It was all about not being alone, and having a cloud of witnesses around us.  Then in small group we played some games then had a group discussion.  Today was the first day that everyone really opened up and talked during discussion, so it was really interesting and a lot of fun.  This afternoon is our day off so I am sure we will have a lot of fun and laughs.  Last night’s worship service was eye opening (even though most people’s eyes were closed).  We all remembered our baptisms by having water flung on us (so much fun!). Lastly, last night there was a Trace Bundy concert.  He is an AMAZING guitarist.  Craig, Chase, and Conner’s faces were priceless watching him play (wide eyes and dropped jaws).  I can’t wait for the last few days.  Each day feels like a week here!

Peace&Love,

-- Erin R.

(Oh yeah, our leaders are great!  We are having so much fun with them and they teach us something new each day!)

In the past week I have seen a change in myself…  I have grown physically and emotionally through the help of others in our at home group, and my small group.  Through this experience I have learned to love my friends and enemies as we love God and ourselves.  This week we have talked about a “fight” to make our world good.  When we say we are “fighting,” we say we care.  We say we love.  For who… what… why do we ‘fight…  We call this a “fight,” but what are we fighting for?  Sometimes our fighting causes destruction, pain, and hurt.  For who… what… why do we “care?”  But how many times a day we see people in need of assistance and do something about it?  A person in the street playing his broken guitar to make ends meet to feed his family.  Or a person on the street without a coat.  Or a child begging for food since his parents can’t provide for him and his brothers and sisters.  But for who… what… why do we “love?”  When the holidays, birthdays come around do we often think of those with no family or friends to spend that special day with?  Why do we “fight” against each other when what we need to do is come together as a family in Christ and work together for healing, and peace, and a better world?  In Montreat I have found that family.  We are not alone in this world and when we feel the most alone and we turn away from each other we need to remember Jesus Christ and the love he has for us and we are very blessed with our lives.

11:15am, Wednesday:  Posts from Group Members
From Taylor G:  Montreat is a beautiful place for change. Each morning we start our day with keynote.  This small “service” includes energizers and worship songs to get us awake and excited about the day ahead of us.  Then the keynote speaker sets us off on the theme with stories, Bible verses, video clips, and all kinds of creative ways to tell the Bible message.  Small groups come next.  Small groups contain three adult leaders and around thirty conferees.  Small groups are held before and after lunch and are a learning opportunity as well as a chance to bond with kids that live all across the United States and are on their faith journeys, just as all of us are.  The day ends with worship.  A worship service led by Pastor Tim, and includes praises, prayers, and confession.  Yesterday was the sermon on the renewal of baptism.  Instead of having all 1,300 conferees come up to the stage and be reminded of their own baptism one at a time, several adult leaders came up and down the pews with tree branches and bowls of water.  Every one in the auditorium was reminded with sprays of water flung from drenched tree branches.  Montreat is a beautiful small town that is bursting with life, laughs, and love.  It’s love that will set the world on fire.

From the kitchen:  I’ve never been very talented at writing a “blog,” but I specifically asked to write one today.  As the “cook,” it’s been challenging (as usual) to coordinate all the meals, cook for 18 people, get lemonade made and shopping on a budget. The youth and other adults have been fabulous this week. No one has food poisening and everyone generally seems happy with the food. =).  Which is a great thing when there is only one cook, and everyone knows who to blame it on if something goes wrong!! The menu this week has been well balanced ( for all you concerned parents). We’ve had My Father’s Pizza (a local place in Black Mountain), lasagna, hamburgers and hot dogs, baked chicken and mashed potatoes… and the rest of the week will bring tacos, spaghetti and a night out at a restaurant.  So don’t worry, everyone is being fed and there is plenty to eat!!  Monday night (baked Chicken and potatoes) we had a few extra guests with us for dinner.  The band leading music at the conference (Bill, Franklin, and Daniel) joined us for food, fellowship and laughter, and on Friday during the lunch hour we will have two more guests, Scott Brown (a conference co-director) and Rachel Van Marter, a youth colleague of Brittney Shook’s from our national PC(USA) task force on youth ministry.  As the middle of the week is quickly approaching, and as I sit here in a room full of laughing youth, I’m reminded of why we’re here and why we are all children of God. God is good and God is in this place and with us all the time.

A day in the life of Montreat Youth Conference:  It occurred to me since most of you are reading about Montreat for the very first time it might be helpful to give you and idea of our daily schedule.  A typical day begins with the early risers (and those who value hot water over extra sleep) waking around 6:30am.  The kitchen is “open” for breakfast from 7:45-8:30 and we leave the house around 8:35 to make the walk to Anderson Auditorium and get our place in line, waiting for the doors to open!  Doors open at 9am.  9:05 brings our recreation leaders who build community through musical movement and other interactive actions.  We hear the daily announcements from our conference co-directors, then Bill and the band lead us in 15 minutes of singing. The music also includes a theme song that the music leader writes specifically for this conference.  Our group gives the theme song a HUGE thumbs up!  Then keynote begins, framing the rest of the day by bringing the daily scriptures to life.  Keynote ends usually by 10:25,and then we disperse to small groups.  All small groups are using the same manual of activities that further develop the theme of the conference and allow time for the young people to break down the texts and interact with it in creative ways.  Noon brings a walk back to the house for lunch, and small groups meet again at 2:00 each afternoon (except today). Small groups end again around 3:30 and some days involve recreation events, others involve free time to enjoy the beauty of Montreat. Our group used pedal boats and went to the pool yesterday in this time slot.  5:45pm or so brings dinner, and as you already read Heather has been keeping a tight ship in the kitchen and we are all grateful for her efforts!  We make our way back to the auditorium before doors open again for worship at 7:15pm.  We sing some more and then worship each evening with a PACKED house of enthusiastic youth and their leaders.  After worship there is a recreation event or entertainment.  Last night our group was captivated by the unique and creative acoustic stylings of Trace Bundy from Colorado.  He was fantastic and also had a great message to share with the youth.  Trace told them it’s not about the music he shares, but he hopes that he loves well in this world in the way God calls us to love one another.  He charged all of us to love well, too!  A day begins to wind down at 11pm(ish) for our back home devotions.  Last night (or this morning) lights out was 12:45am, but a handful choose to go to bed a bit before that! =)  Now I was up at 6:30am this morning (I wanted that first shower of the day feeling!), and as I’m typing this at 7:34am I hear the stirrings of young people waking up,ready to start a new day that we thank God to have the opportunity to spend in Montreat!

Moments:  In many ways, moments are what make youth ministry such a joy!  A Montreat youth conference is filled with moments.  Grace filled moments.  Holy Spirit moments.  EmmanueI (God with us) moments.  I want to share just a few with you in this post because these moments are God’s very activity in and through our young people.  Moments like Patrick coming down the front steps of the house to take a flashlight to an adult who was stumbling in the dark. Moments like Kevin I. bringing Katherine a glass of water from the kitchen as she balances summer reading and chatting with friends.  Moments like Erin waiting patiently for another member of the group lagging just a bit behind while rock hopping.  Moments like Craig’s awe when seeing the talents of an accomplished guitar player, Lizzy and Conner joyfully singing and clapping in the back of the van on the way to worship.  Moments like Heather H. getting soaking wet in the creek and getting right back up to do it again…  Moments like Keven F. taking the group to the pool.  Moments like Katharine giving impromptu diving lessons (that's DIVING, not driving!) and helping each other out.  Moments like Chase self reflecting during back-home time and appreciating the gifts of the preacher.  Moments like Jesse recognizing Lindsey M. and her amazing gift for coloring.  Moments like Heather M. baking her killer pie and her capacity to invite others to the table.  Moments like Lindsey S. cracking a joke at just the right time.  Moments like Nicole sticking with a goal and improving herself, one corn bag at a time. Moments like Taylor pointing out the power of the ritual of the Lord’s prayer.  Moments like Brittany asking about serving as a Youth Advisory Delegate at our denomination's general assembly next summer, and even knowing where it will be held.  Moment upon moment, building relationships, moments of questioning and inner reflection, moments of scripture exploration and moments of sharing more of one another with God and others.  Moments turn into minutes, and minutes turn into hours, and hours turn into days, and days into months, and months into years.  God is alive and well in the youth and adults of Pioneer.  These are precious moments indeed.  Thanks be to God.

End of the day (12:39am), Tuesday

It's been another fantastic day here.  We had an incredibly uplifting worship service with the images of a refiner's fire and the fountain of god's grace symbolized in baptism. So much to tell and share, but we are going to try and sleep a little. Look for another update in the late morning wednesday.  We are praying for all of y'all, or as some say in these parts we are praying for all y'all!

3:05pm, Tuesday:  "Back Home Group" & A New Day
A big part of the Montreat youth conference is the "Back Home Group" time.  This typically begins at around 11pm at the conclusion of the conference activities each night.  Last night during our Pioneer back home time, we shared the highlights of our day with each other.  For some it was their small group meetings, for others story sharing and laughter around Montreat, but three in our group mentioned the powerful experience of praying the Lord's Prayer in unison during worship.  It was amazing, they said, to be a part of 1300+ voices praying as one voice - one body - the body of Jesus Christ!  Wow!

This highlight of this morning's keynote was a live video conference with Athena, a missionary in the Philippines, who was kind enough to share some reflections on her work and the context in which she is serving.  It was 3am her time when she was streamed live into the auditorium.  She talked about how she is reminded daily of God's command to love your neighbor as yourself.  She also challenged the young people to reflect on the question, "What do human rights issues half a world away have to do with us?"  It will be interesting to see what responses we get tonight at our back home time...  It's a good question for all of us to ponder.  It makes us wonder what "holy interruptions" may be placed in our path, to stir us from apathy and truly live out our call as the body of Christ and the children of God...

9:26pm, Monday:  Messages from Group Members

The focus of small groups on day one is community building.  Small groups see the youth mixed with youth from other churches around the country.  As you can see the understandable anxieties of meeting new people quickly went away.  Here first hand accounts from three of our youth.  We'll write more in the days ahead:

Today was SO cool!  First we learned some goofy dances and we sang and danced during keynote, it was pretty sweet.  Then we broke into our small groups which was on the verge of THE COOLEST THING EVER!!! The people are so fun and I really like them.  We played ice breaker games for the first hour or so, and then talked about what happened in keynote earlier. Back at the house after small groups we started having lunch and played cards- they were pretty intense and everyone learned that Jesse is SUPER competitive when it comes to cards and corn hole and other simple games.  Our group is getting super tight, but we’re also bonding with other kids from the conference.  When we went back to our groups after lunch and each group did a different version of telling the story of the burning bush from the Bible.   Then we got involved in a scavenger hunt throughout the campus where we had to partake in  weird games that were so fun! We had to tie out legs to each other and had a massive three-legged race.  We went back to the house and had dinner with the band who plays every day during worship and keynote.  So pretty much this has been THE COOLEST THING!!! I’m having so much fun and learning a lot so far, thanks Pioneer!

- Katharine T.

Today was amazing! And it’s ironic because I was so nervous to go to my small group. I didn’t think I would have any friends and I didn’t even want to go. Oh how the tables have turned. I can’t wait to go back! Everyone in my grouped clicked instantly and we were all joking around with each other within the first five minutes. We played this really awesome survivor game where everyone had to work together and compete with the other groups. We also played this game where we got a partner and told our life stories to them in 30 seconds, and then our partner repeated it to the rest of the group. Keynote was also amazing! We learned these amazing dances and we sang really cool songs. (the band is actually at our house as I’m typing this). Tonight we have this disco inferno dance that we’re all going to. And I’m just guessing that it will also be amazing, just like today!!

Thank you Pioneer! We’ve been praying for you (:

-Lindsey S.

Today was so amazingly awesome!!!!  We got our small groups today and being a little nervous to be in a group with no one I knew, things quickly changed.  Our group got along very well.  We had survivor games with our group today and if I do say so myself my group rocked it!!!!  We were constantly getting things done first.  We had to turn a blanket upside down with 20 people standing on it.  One of the first ones done!!!  Then we had to tie our feet to the persons next to us and walk together…again done in 5 minutes.  Then we had to get water out of the creek into a bucket only using duct tape and Popsicle sticks, in one try we got all our water we needed into the bucket.  We’ve done many energizers in the morning that are crazy fun.  I’ve already made new friends from my small group.  Our youth group has gotten so incredibly close already and it’s only Monday!!  The day the conference started we had to whole day to do whatever we wanted so some of us climbed Look Out Mt., then after lunch we went back out and rock hopped our way to the pool. Overall these two days have seemed long but so much fun!!!!!!

-Brittney S.

3:48pm, Monday:  The First Day

The first full day of the conference is well under way.  We had a nice soft overnight rain that cleared off in time for our 15 minute morning walk to the auditorium.  Energizers and singing were followed by our first keynote session.  Our keynote leadership team, led by Adele Halliday and her drama team from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, started to dive into the theme of “World on Fire.”  Our conference co-directors told the adults last night that the youth members of conference planning teams did not want things sugar coated, and wanted “to go there” this week.  So we will be “going there” exploring real themes and real issues that our young people deal with in their own lives locally and globally.

It started slowly as we were asked the question “Where in the world do you live?” followed by “Where in the world have you been?” and “Where in the world is your favorite place to be?”  The questions then turned introspective, “Is there anything in your personal world you wish could be changed?”

From there a video montage that posed the question, “How many words does it take to make someone forget all that God created them to be?”  The answer: one.  Words have power.  Unfortunately some words uttered in school halls, homes, and even in church can hurt and do damage that takes a long time to unpack.  Labels can be hurtful.  Waiting for change can be hard too.

The drama team brought scenes to life from Exodus chapter three:  Moses, the burning bush, and the Israelites’ hard knock life of slavery under Pharaoh’s iron fist.  “When will God answer our prayers?” the Israelites must have wondered.  “Where is God while our backs are physically breaking?”  “Where is God when we are spiritually empty?”

We sang the words, “I follow the flame…”  The flame never quits burning.  God calls us in our ordinary everyday lives to do something different.  Responding to the needs of the world seems like a big job.  The good news is all you need to start a fire is a match and then give the flame a little room to breathe.

We have 18 members of the Pioneer family who have already felt the spark in our own lives.  Here in this space of Montreat there is plenty of breathing room to let the flames burn bright!  God is good…

Still to come:  small group recreation this afternoon, dinner, and then our first conference worship service of the week.  We feel so supported by all of your love and prayers.  Thank you Pioneer family!

12:45am, Sunday:  The End of the Day

What a great day Sunday was!  The noise level at meal time has increased big time!  It is a sure indication of a wonderful group of young people building community through shared experiences.  The day started with a great breakfast, then eleven young people joined Keven French and Lindsey May for a hike up lookout mountain.  It's a pretty good hike and getting to the top was a great accomplishment.  We hope to post some pix Monday night.

The afternoon included rock hopping (which is the exotic Montreat name for walking in a creek) and some time in the Montreat pool.  Throw in some hearty games of dominos and corn hole for good measure, and that made for a great day.  Oh wait I forgot to mention we did all that before the conference officially started!

Tonight the group waited in line for twenty minutes for the doors of Anderson Auditorium to open for the opening night program.  We found two pews toward the front left side and soon joined thirteen hundred other people in "holy motion movement" to lots of different songs.  Energizers can be a bit silly at first glance, but as one of our youth observed, "It was so cool to be able to do that without being judged."  Wow!  It can be hard being a teenager, but what a great testament to the insights that can be gained at every turn.  We lifted our voices in song as well.  We will get better as the week goes on in that department as new songs become familiar.

Monday morning will bring our first keynote of the week and we meet our small groups for the first time.  We will begin to unpack the theme, "World On Fire," in deep and meaningful ways.  We'll be asking where is God in our chaotic world, and is it possible to set the world on fire by sharing the love of God?  We have a lot to look forward to this week.  Thanks, Pioneer family.  We love you and we'll keep you posted with our posts!  Good night from North Carolina.  Or is it good morning already?

Noon, Sunday:  Lookout Mountain

We got a call from Keven French and the group -- calling from the top of Lookout Mountain!  Lookout is a nice hike that took the group to the top of a mountain that overlooks Montreat and the whole valley.  It's a beautiful view, and an accomplishment that  most folks have to make when they visit Montreat.  They were obviously having a good time and excited for the conference to begin this evening.

7:40am, Sunday:  Montreat in the Morning

Montreat in the morning. A peaceful reminder of what a great corner of the world This is.  We have settled in to our house for the week and it was a neat scene on the porch.  Guitars playing, stories being shared and our group getting to know each other better.  Neil led the group on a tour around lake susan, the centerpiece of the conference center while Heather Myer and Lindsey May made the first grocery run and picked up dinner.  We had devotions and we are praying by name for all in the pioneer family-a great practice using the church directory. A way of staying connected to all of you who have supported us in prayers and financially.  We will get a hearty breakfast on this our one sleep in morning then enjoy a hike or rock hopping in flat creek. Tonight we will make our way to Anderson Auditorium and join the 1280 + others for energizes and singing as we get ready to explore the theme world on fire. Until we write again, thanks for your love a support!
